Critter Care Shift

Advanced Shift: The Critter Care Volunteer works in the Center where the Ambassador Animals reside.  This is the first thing the public will see when they come through the door, so it is imperative that it be maintained to the highest standards. Our ambassador animals are critical to the success of our education program and deserve the best quality diets as well as a variety of enrichment activities. Our volunteers make a difference in their lives by providing the best care for them.

Primary Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Daily feeding and care of ambassador animals
  • Cleaning and disinfecting enclosures
  • Cleaning and disinfecting aquaria
  • Washing dishes
  • Disinfecting counters
  • Prepping food
  • Sweeping
  • Mopping
  • Other daily cleaning tasks as assigned

Requirements

  • Must be 18 or older
  • Must pass a background check
  • Must complete volunteer registration and orientation
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • Must complete 12 hours of Critter Care (CC) Shadow Training to volunteer
  • Must complete the department’s animal handling training to handle any ambassadors. Each animal has specific training that must be completed.
  • Volunteers are required to commit to 16 hours per month to volunteer in Critter Care.
  •  16 hours of Support Shifts are required before being considered to train in Critter Care

Changing Office Locations:

The HHS Wildlife Center will be changing locations to a new and improved building in 2024. The new location will be 3100 W. Fuqua Street, Houston, TX 77045.
